Did the new Hot Chip video rip off ‘All the Small Things’ by Blink 182?

The new Hot Chip video seems like it is trying to trick people into thinking that they are a boy band. Then the video ‘gets all zany’ and some guy with cancer starts to shoot lasers at the members of the boy band, then joins the boy band, then some black guy shoots lasers out of his eyes and kills the boy band.
Confused. Relieved that the video features tons of hot entry level alt tween girls in wayfarers with clear lenses + Palestinian scarves.
Wonder if this is supposed to be ‘loved by alts’ because it is commentary on the mainstream, or if it is supposed to ‘crossover’ into mainstreamland because it provides commentary on a ~10 year old part of pop culture. (Maybe these bands are still big in Europe.) It seems like this might have been relevant criticism of the boy band phenomenon during the early 2000s / late 1990s, during the peak of Backstreet Boy / NSYNC mania.
Seems plausible that they ‘ripped off’ this idea from Blink 182, who made the timely video for ‘All the Small Things’ in 2000, which parodied the boy band craze of the late 1990s. Maybe it is time to start re-thinking Blink 182 as one of the greatest/most important bands of all time.
Is Blink 182 the perfect alternative band?

Was it good to see Hot Chip make something that didn’t involve dancing in front of green screens?

In regards to the vid…I like the look of horror on the faces of the audience at a cancer patient in full cancer unit regalia and the black dude at the end appears to have such intense thyroid probs that he can actually bug his eyes out soo much that lasers come out!!! WTF Hot Chip…awful song, awful, deplorable, wannabe-ironic video = reason to show off their abs…

this video is seriously horrible. it’s quite clear what they were getting at – “our music is poppy and accessible, without being completely superficial!” they’re trying to suggest that no matter what musical style is “in,” their music will always be playable. i wrote a review of this album a few months ago. you should read it since i’m a genius.

Idk who Blink 128 is and I ‘can’t be assed’ to read the whole post/watch the video clips, but I know hipsters who have ‘impeccable hipster taste’ who ‘dig’ the Hot Chips so I have to conclude it is ‘unlikely’ a kewl electropop ‘outfit’ beloved of kewl people would ‘rip off’ an unknown dude who has a ridiculous name and was, most likely, ‘beloved’ of non-hipsters.

they are the real band. a bunch of dorks from the uk with synths. thats why this video works because people hear this shit in clubs now over hear and love it – they just never take the time to investigate and learn more about them. and yes to an earlier comment. they are still alt in my opinion. they stuck to their guns and are still making the smae great music they did 6 years ago. the main stream in the uk has just changed to match – as always

All the small things clip was a ripoff of the ‘it wont last’ clip done by The Cruel Sea about a year earlier.

OK in this video hot chip is the horrible looking cancer guy and they are saying they can vanquish the boy bands cos they are alt-bros but then they (and the fans) realise their music is one and the same with the boy bands so they join forces and that’s when the blipster comes in and vanquishes everyone for being fggts.
Part 2 is beyonce teaming up (gaga telephone style) with grizzly bears to resurrect white music.
