Adbusters releases new issue predicting the end of culture/civilization/Generation Y/etc.
Published on Wednesday 3/3/2010 @ 9:50 AM by the ALT REPORT Robot
After the success of the hit article/magazine/issue Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilization in 2008, AdBusters has been jonesing hard to create a new idea / meme / controversy to go viral as a convo topic 4 pseudo-intellectual-internet-users 2 help their brand. I am not sure if their magazine appeals to Generation Y, or older people who frown down on Gen Y / hipsters / modern counter culture.

Basically, these is a group of articles presenting the idea thatt Gen Y ‘fucking sucks’, Gen Y doesn’t know how 2 express their innerspirit and usually just chill on the internet, and when the Western World becomes ‘ours’ within the next 10 years, we will lose to China since we are just a bunch of out-of-touch with reality dreamers. It seems like a good set of ideas to read while you are passing a bowel movement on a toilet (This is a compliment).
It seems like there are a lot of great sensational buzz statements in this piece about Generation Y:
Now that so many Western economies are trapped in a deepening recession with no end in sight, Gen Y faces the possibility of becoming a lost generation, plagued by un- and underemployment for the whole of their adult life. We were born into Spielbergian dreams and all-you-can-eat promises of prosperity, but now we’ll be lucky if we can scrape together a scrap of the half-eaten capital pop tart.
In addition, these titles + descriptive phrases are somewhat ‘interesting’, like something that sounds like it is written in the Bible, except they are making prophetic, absolute statements:
The Coming Barbarism Gen Y is the greatest threat to consumer capitalism yet.
The Birth of Altermodern Is postmodernity slipping into something new?
Bleak, Shallow and Repetitive Virtual life seems increasingly less worth living.
Rupture or Rapture? This millennium-long human adventure of ours may now be reaching a climax.

Do yall think Adbusters has a strong brand, or are they a just a better/worse version of Newsweek/Time Magazine?
Sorta would be chill if the world ended bc of Gen Y.
Is Gen Y going to ‘choke’ when it is our time 2 shine?
Is capitalism/democracy ‘bullshit’?
Is society post-post-post-modern? (WTF is altermodern?)
R u worried abt society, or should we just tweet/chill on FB?

@Preter, “By this standard, the boomers are the worst generation because they have sacrificed the economies and environs of the future for their own comfort and security. But what of Gen Y?”
Will Gen Y find their own CReaTiViTY? They, could, it’s their choice. Just cuz our parents don’t care, doesnt mean we shouldnt care. There will be some shining stars in this generation, ones that are not products ready for mass marketing, but who will work hard against the prevailing tides of mind-numbing corporate imagery to enlighten their generation and the older ones. And they “will/will not be televised”

Then things will really be fun and there will be no unity in this country and each “group” will be pitted against one another! We will rot from within like the Romans and turn into the third world! Yay diversity!!! Thank you liberals/PC groupthink thought processes!

article seems real ’self defeating’. seems like the article tried to paint a real ‘bleak’ picture of impending wstrn society while offering ‘zero solutions’. seems like the author intends to say ‘lets do something y’all’ but in reality worsens the problem by offering gen y a ’shitload’ of ‘excuses’ that we can simply use to ‘justify our apathy’. in response, we seem 2 resonate by saying, ‘damn y’all, might learn chinese’.
seems like its all relative. feel like when the baby boomers were born 1000 yrs ago, the previous generation prly ’shat all over’ them 2. feel like this adbusters bro is no diffy.
still seems sorta pointless ‘generalizing’ abt ‘generations’. there will always be mnstrm bros/businessmen who ‘rly want mad bank’ who will take care of the world/capitalism/china 4 us. as long as we get paid to sit on hro @ work, who the fuck cares.

ad busters is cool sometimes, and sometimes they’re a little to righteous, but even when they are righteous they’re usually right, just too in your face about it…this article is just like their ‘death of the hipster’ covers tory that basically said all hipster culture is inherently parasitic and its needs authentic culture to leech off of and then when its bored it’ll move on to the next host…which is true, and culture is not something to just frivolously invest in, but that seems all to common in the current blogosphere / memed out landscape…i think that people should just enjoy things they enjoy and not worry about what things are…the new mariah carey album was awesome, and so is the new pictureplane, and tim and eric, and young jeezy, and ruby, and the bad girls club…as time goes on all these cultural lines are getting more blurry and distinctly defined aesthetics / subcultures will begin to osmosis into each other…i listen to three 6 mafia, i watch degrassi, and i like dressing like a 1992 talbots yuppie mom…does being authentic in 2010 just mean whoever samples the best wins? that seems like the current gague as far as authenticty is concerned…sampling is an entirely postmodern concept and if you’re skill is being really really good at stealing only the best in culture to reappropriate for your own cause, then you’re a valuable addition to the current cultural climate…richard prince just takes photos of advertisements and dude’s a genii…i often think that authenticity is canonized next to who ever was first, and even if u come up with the same idea by accident, that’s like psychic cheating to a degree…but no matte what, there’s lots of cool stuff and lets enjoy it yall!…culture is the best culture for-always…

Gen Y isn’t going to do shit, to be truthful, you forgot GENERATION X HAS YET TO EVEN TAKE THEIR POSITIONS AT THE TOP YET!
If anything Gen X is going to have to pull us out of this shit, since they are the clean up generation, gen y has fucked up and are the children of the “ME! ME!” generation (or boomers, aka selfish self centered fucks who presented the nanny state. Gen Y is pretty much pathetic, polarized, and loves shitty mainstream music like Lil Wayne and thinks “Knocks You Down” by Keri Hilson is deep, the problem with Gen Y is that every wants to have a problem, every either wants to be some down trotted hip-hop or emo fggt, who takes the story of the time mommy said they couldn’t go to Chuckie Cheese and blows it up to the reason they’re doing coke, fucking everyone, and drinking them selves to death in false emotional/confident rage.
Take this from a member of gen Y, it’s a shit generation, hopefully Gen Z will deal Gen Y their own bullshit on a platter.

Dear @Carles,
I think you prolly misinterpreted this article. AdBusters is very much pro-GEN Y, and you took alot out of context. Are you a FUCKING MIDSTER/SPICSTER yuppster boomer chinkey? Yayo. Capitalism is shit, and it will die with gen Y. In case you haven’t woken up yet, this shit is the future.
Yes, there is a major economic recession, and yes I read AdBusters while I take a crap…their articles are perfectly timed for that shit. But, gen Y, the lost gen, will take over the world, and allow US&A to relinquish its world powers, and turn the freedom train towards the freedom station…that actually consists of the free sentiments that we share collectively via the hippy movement. (YEA, I said it, you guys just want to be free, and every generation needs a revolution.) Hipsters just want to be free, and consumerism won’t buy freedom. Dig a hole as deep as you want, but fate will run its course. I can only hope that the movement will provoke all other generations to follow the pursuit of happiness/the best interests of mankind, instead of consumerism/capitalism.
Tao, you might provide satirically correct interpretations of gen Y, but you “busted” this one. Do you want your satires to become reality? Will everybody in the year 2020 be wearing skinny jeans, v-necks, and big $ewlrey?

The only reason there is a lack of motivation and a substitution of interest placed in random bullshit (facebook, call of duty, jersey shore, drug experimentation, whatever) is because the system is set up for us to never feel like we can change anything. No one cares because everyone is conscious that there is nothing they can realistically do. But if everyone continues to become conscious of the fact that this whole society is a complete fucking lie, then that is a step in the right direction and the prelude to genuine change.

The revolution will NOT be televised.
When our generation realizes that they are doomed to live at home with the parents and no longer afford Am Ap (or conversely spend all their precious “creativiity” on corporations, the last people who might hire them…) then what? You have to be anti-identity, you have to be silent. You have to be creative in ways that aren’t going to be picked out for being “creative”.
R U READY 2 B posthuman?
